The 2nd Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka has been cancelled coming after the attack upon the coach containing the tourists’ squad in Lahore.
5 Pakistani police officers following the team bus were killed in the gunfire and 7 Sri Lanka players were wounded.
Chaminda Vaas, Ajantha Mendis, Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Kumar Sangakkara, Tharanga Paranavitana and Suranga Lakmal were the players wounded.
Samaraweera, who was hit in the thigh, and Paranavitana are in hospital.
Fortunately, none of the players’ injuries are serious and the remainder of the Sri Lanka team are expecting to be flown back home after being airlifted from the Gaddafi Stadium to the National arena in Lahore.
Sri Lanka’s assistant coach, onetime Kent and Middlesex batsman Paul Farbrace, endured a shrapnel injury to his arm in the onslaught.
The coach was in a convoy along its route to the stadium in advance of the 3rd day of the 2nd Test match.
Match umpire Chris Broad, the father of England bowler Stuart Broad, was in the vehicle trailing the Sri Lanka squad.
Broad, umpires Simon Taufel and Steve Davis and TV umpire Nadeem Chauri were safe and sound but their driver was killed by gunfire and Broad was left splashed with blood.
Past Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis was metres away from the Sri Lankan bus whilst the attack occurred.
The tour was only organised after India were excluded by their authorities from travelling the area coming after the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008.
India and New Zealand wore black armbands for their ODI in Napier for a mark of respect for the victims of the Lahore attack.
