The first season was last year and was launched on April 18th and ran until June 1st The IPL is a twenty20 cricket competition which means each team bats and fields for 20 overs each, the IPL is by far the most watched Twenty20 competition in the world.

The Rajasthan Royals made history last year by becoming the winners of the very first IPL when they successfully beat the Chennai Super Kings in the final of the competition.

Despite being called the Indian Premier League, the second season will not actually be held in India, this is because of the 2009 Indian General Elections and it is not deemed a good ideas hosting such a high profile event in the middle of politics, despite interest from England and Australia to host this year’s competition, South Africa will actually be the country to host it.

The IPL starts off as a ‘Round Robin’ system where each team play each other twice then the top four teams progress into the semi finals, obviously the two winners will then battle out the final.

What makes this sport so different to any others is that a few months before the start of the season, some of the world’s top players are actually up in an auction and basically the highest bidding teams win that specific player. This doesn’t mean that a richer team can go out and buy everyone because in a squad of 16, 8 must be local, you can also sign uncapped players or domestic players.
