Current World Cricket Rankings

Often official rankings in sport can be very misleading but the International Cricket Council’s system seems to be an accurate reflection of the current state of the world game.

It is common sense and indeed common knowledge that Australia are by far and away the best cricketing nation in one day and test cricket. This fact is well reflected in the current ICC official rankings with the Aussies clear in both tables. What is interesting to see from the statistics is how little, compared to the other top sides, that Australia play test cricket. Ricky Ponting’s men have played eight matches less than their nearest rivals, South Africa, but I guess when you win pretty much every match you play there is no need for a lot of fixtures.

Well if Australia is the bride then South Africa is definitely cricket’s bridesmaids at the moment. Although a decent way behind in the test table the Proteas are only just lagging in the one-day ladder having player four less games than their Southern Hemisphere rivals.

The rankings also confirm England fans’ suspicions that their beloved side has become very ordinary over the last few years. When the Michael Vaughan lead side of 2005 won the Ashes the team were propelled into the second spot in the longest form of the game only for things to start to unravel the following winter when Australia extracted revenge with a series whitewash. England have never really recovered and sit mid table in both guides.
