Durham may be fourites to win the County Championship this season but there has been some money towards last season’s champions Sussex.

The 14/1 shots are currently sitting fifth in the division one table 20 points off leaders Nottinghamshire so you’d think they have a mountain to climb. However thanks to the rather complicated points system the County Championship employs a twenty-point gap can be gone in one match. The South coast side are on a three match unbeaten run in the league and were in excellent form when drawing with Lancashire at Old Trafford, only denied a victory by the weather. They’ve also been going great guns in the one-day pro40 league, which will only add to the side’s confidence.

The Sharks have one more thing in their advantage too – the climate. Sussex play three of their last four games in the south of the country and it is possible that they will complete more fixtures than their rivals due to dryer weather. This should give them more points than their northern rivals, who are more likely to face weather delays.

Also being well backed at the moment is Somerset who currently occupy third in the Championship. Currently around 4/1 to take the division one crown the Sabres recent fixtures have been disrupted by the weather but the west country side have been able to pick up decent points in the process keeping them within touching distance. If they can continue to do that then they are in with a shout.
