Cricket History
Cricket is one of the oldest sports in the world and actually dates back to the 16th century. I like to refer to it as the Marmite of sport, mainly because you either love it or hate it. Cricket is trationally an English sport but is now popular all over the world. The game is made up of two teams against each other, both with eleven players each but only two players from one team are on the field from one team against the eleven on the other team, this is because those two players are batting.
This means that when the ball is bowled at them, their aim is to smash the ball over the pitch boundaries to get runs and to keep the ball away from the fielders of the opposition. The aim of the fielding team is to his the stumps, these are wooden sticks in the ground and if the ball hits the stumps, that batsman is "out" which means he needs to leave the field and the next team member comes in to take his place. Another way to be "out" is if you have hit the ball into the air but a member of the fielding team catches the ball before it hits the ground. When all batting members are out they teams then swap and the roles are reversed, then the aim of the game is to hit the most runs within the set overs. An over is 6 legals balls from the bowler and then a different bowler bowls from the other end, there is usually a limit in overs (unless it is a test match) and this is to stop the game going on for days and days. In the professional game there are two different types of cricket and that is county cricket and international cricket, there are however many different types of games, for example you can have a test match, a one day international, a day/night match, a 20/20 competition any many more.
