Classic Cricket Matches in the UK
Often it is the drama of a one-day game or more latterly a Twenty20 match that captures the public’s imagination but one of the classic cricket matches in the UK has to be the 2nd test of the 2005 Ashes at Egbaston.
Having been trounced in the first match of the series England needed to win not only to get back in the series, but to restore confidence after a over hyped build-up.
Having started well hitting 407 in there first innings it was an all too familiar s as they threatened to throw it away. Australia replied with 308 giving Michael Vaughan’s side a lead of 99 but the Aussies came back strongly bowling out their hosts for just 182.
Chasing the win Australia looked in trouble and England were sensing victory. But up stepped the man who England fans love to hate Shane Warne who started to make the partisan crowd nervous.
Warne would eventually go for 42 and but not before he’d put the tourist within sight of victory. Brett Lee continued to make things uncomfortable for the home fans and with number 11 batsman Michael Kasprowicz put together a partnership of 59 for the last wicket.
However with just three needed to win and time running out for England Kasprowicz gloved one down the leg side where wicketkeeper Geriant Jones took the catch. The result was the tightest ever by a runs margin in the 128-year history of the Ashes.
