Bet Cricket – Panesar for the Push
Bet on Cricket – Not long ago, the idea of an England side taking the field without spin guru Monty Panesar would have been dismissed as preposterous.
But following the debacle at Sabina Park, in which the spinner once again failed to exploit a friendly pitch, many cricket-watchers are openly questioning his worth to the team.
Panesar’s batting and fielding skills, if they can be described as such, are barely adequate for county level, let alone Tests. So the onus will always be on him to take wickets.
However, in recent series against South Africa and India, his rate of return has simply not been good enough, and his style has become far too predictable.
With the emergence of both Graeme Swann and Yorkshire youngster Adil Rashid as credible alternatives Panesar’s automatic inclusion can no longer be guaranteed.
And if the selectors pretend that there isn’t a problem, they are doing themselves, the player and team no favours.
Panesar must develop his game far more than he has done over recent months. The introduction of Mushtaq Ahmed to the coaching team may assist him in this.
But with the Ashes only five months away, perhaps a spell away from the firing line might be the best option for him.
If Panesar can return refreshed and invigorated following a successful start to the county season, he may yet prove a threat to the Aussies.
And do not forget that all the Ashes betting will be available at all the leading bookmakers nearer to the date of the epic series between England and Australia. Bet on Cricket
